About Us

USW Local 1-2017 is the largest Local Union in Canada, covering from Fort Nelson to 100 Mile House, and west to Smithers. We represent over 5200 members in Forestry, Value Added, Mining, Construction, Electrical, Trucking, Automotive, Energy, Health Care, and Land Fill Sites.

USW Local 1-2017 has 70 years of experience representing workers in all walks of life. The former IWA, now United Steelworkers Local received its charter in 1946 during some of the most turbulent years ever faced by men and women in the Forest Industry of Northern BC. Through long winter strikes and court battles Union Members have fought to improve wages from $1.00 a day, shorten 14 hour shifts, and have won benefits, overtime, and pensions. Today our members enjoy full health benefits, decent wages, better working conditions, and a pension plan for the future.
